Re: How are Things Going in Chicago?

Hey Craig,

Hope you are getting settled into the new living and school arrangements and that classes are off to a good start.  Have you had a chance to sample the locale cuisine, like the legendary Chicago stuffed pizza or Carson’s Ribs? If you have a choice on the pizza, I would suggest Leona’s, which is a small locale chain, assuming there is one nearby, or else you can always go to Giordano’s, which seems to be everywhere.

I have managed to have Giordano’s and I definitely enjoyed the stuffed pizza but I am actually reduced to eating mostly cafeteria “cuisine” since I have been spending most of my money on art supplies and winter clothes. Once I take care of my expenses I will be sure to check those out.

Is your college life going to be pretty much self-contained on the campus and surrounding neighborhoods, or will you be venturing out in the rest of the city?  One nice thing about Chicago is that the public transportation system is very good and convenient.  I don’t think that they have tokens for the buses and L anymore, but I used to use them everyday going to and from work, as well as shopping in the downtown malls, like Water Tower Place, 900 N. Michigan Ave., etc.

I am finally settled in and definitely planning to explore. As a full time student I get unlimited access to CTA trains and busses so I have been using it, it really is amazing how convenient it is. So far I have seen some of the typical tourist spots (Sears Tower, Navy Pier, etc.), but recently had the opportunity to see a White Sox game, Blue Man Group at the Briar Street Theatre, and a movie downtown and I definitely plan on more, if only I had more free time.

We are in full interview mode at work, and we have 3-4 people coming in each week for positions for next summer and next fall. And we had a guy a couple days ago who is now working near Sacramento for Intel but who got his Comp. Engr. degree from U. of Illinois at Chicago, and he had nothing but good things to say about the school and the programs there.

I hope all goes well with the interview process, and I am glad to hear that about UIC. So far I can tell I made a wise decision to further my education here.

Enjoy the brief Fall that will be happening any day now.  Winter is coming, so if you haven’t already got them, good gloves, a coat, hat, and even a scarf would not be bad to have on hand.  It didn’t always happen, but some years, we had the first winter snowfall by Halloween, so it may sneak up on you quicker than you might think.

Ha ha, yeah, a lot of the people I have met here have been warning me about it. They still can’t believe I wanted to come here. It dropped to about 47 the other night, it felt like Winter back home, but I am definitely stocking up on clothes and I plan to show that Chicago winter what I am made of.

Thanks for the kind words and feel free to keep in touch,

Terrence
